American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Tests

The American Kennel Club’s Canine Good Citizen® (CGC) Test must be given by an approved AKC CGC evaluator who is not familiar with the dogs being tested. Dogs are required to pass all ten items of the CGC Test to become a 4-H PetPAL. Youth and their dogs must perform as a team while taking the tests.

While small dogs may be carried during a 4-H PetPALS visit, they still must pass the CGC test before being permitted to visit.

Dogs must wear well-fitting buckle, slip or quick release collars. Leashes must be made of either leather or fabric (no chain leashes). Handlers are not permitted to use food or toys as rewards during the test. If a dog eliminates during any part of the test, it will not pass.
